PostConfiguring SQL Server Always On Availability Group for High Availability

This is a lesson in one of the courses inside my Ultimate SQL Server Always On Bundle available for Black Friday. It runs from 01-Nov to 20-Dec 2026. Be sure to tell your boss about it. And sign up to my mailing list if you haven’t already done so.

It’s been 14 years since I recorded my very first walkthrough video on SQL Server Always On Availability Groups.

A lot has changed since then after several versions released and a ton of improvements.

But the way to configure an AG has not changed much.

You fire up the AG creation wizard on SSMS and click through the dialog boxes.

And while the simplicity of configuring an AG made it easy for so many database administrators (even sysadmins who know nothing about SQL Server), what goes on while you’re configuring it remains hidden behind dialog boxes.

The reality is, configuring an AG for high availability is more than just checking a box and going through the wizard.

Understanding what each component does and how they work together matter a lot to achieve real high availability for your SQL Server databases.

This video walks you through configuring an AG to build a robust high availability solution for your databases.

Mastering AG requires moving past basic settings to understand how each piece interacts within your SQL Server infrastructure.

Enjoy!
