I use the Cluster Preparation Checklist to standardize the planning process for deploying a Windows Server Failover Cluster running either a SQL Server failover clustered instance or Availability Group.

 

After the initial requirements gathering, send the spreadsheet to the different teams responsible for the components that make up the Windows Server Failover Cluster (WSFC.)

 

When all of the details in the spreadsheet have been filled in, create a draft of the architecture diagram including the specifics that have been written on the spreadsheet.

 

This makes your job a lot easier come deployment time. The design then becomes a part of the operations runbook for reference.
